About The Real Fort Greene

This page is a function of the fact I’ve been reading everyone else’s blogs and there’s no consistent coverage of Fort Greene. There have been several attempts but they all seem to die eventually. While I can’t guarantee how often I’ll update this, I will do my best (time permitting).

I’ve been in and out of the neighborhood since ‘99 (left for a while to go to grad school but moved back as soon as I could escape Massachusetts) and I’ve seen a lot of changes, some good some bad. Anyway feel free to contact me with questions, concerns, rants, whatever…  My email is realfg@gmail.com but I never read it.  Leave a comment. I read those much more often.

Hey Carlton- I’ve been a Fort Greene resident since 1974 -It’s about time someone started writing a blog directed at and about this community – Right On and Madiba is fabulous as well- let’s support them and their continuing efforts to give back to the owner’s roots.

Do you have a RSS feed? Where is it?

    Carlton,

I wanted to shoot you an email, but I couldn’t find your address. I just launched a Fort Greene / Clinton Hill social network. The idea is that neighbors can interact with each other and discuss anything and everything about the neighborhood(s).

The Real Fort Greene’s RSS feed pumps directly onto the main page.

The site just went live late last night, so it’s still in its nascent phases. I would really appreciate it if you could check it out and give me any feedback on how to make it better.

    -Steve

Thanks Steve… I’ll take a look and I appreciate the link. Does this social network mean I’ll have to start using my real name? ;)

    Hi Carlton!

I work with the Irondale Center, a recently opened theatre space on S. Oxford. We’re looking to create a new play about Fort Greene….and we’re going to base it off of true stories from people living and working in the area. Would love to post something on your site about it.

We’re also starting up an online forum where people can share stories too…ironically it has a similar name to yours

Hi Carlton! We’re launching a volunteer-run program in the area that offers people a free, safe walk to their destination. We’re having a volunteer info session in Williamsburg on Monday. I was wondering if you wanted to post the following:

SafeWalk is a volunteer-run program of RightRides where volunteers on bikes offer a free, safe walk to any destination in our service area to callers in Brooklyn on Friday nights. The service is available to anyone and is intended to prevent assault and harassment.

We’ll be having an information session for interested volunteers on Monday, April 20 at 7 pm at Verb Cafe (Bedford Avenue at N5th Street in Williamsburg). More information and updates are available at http://rightrides.org/templates/programs.php?page=bike_patrols and http://www.twitter.com/safewalk. RSVP to safewalknyc at gmail.com is helpful but not necessary.

    Thanks so much!
    Best,
    Leah

the new sandwhich shop on the corner of carlton and dekalb is open. replacing urban spring, the latest incarnation is called “picnic” (originally it was to have been called “breathe in” or something like that but they wanted to have a name that referenced the park – good idea!)
i stopped in on my way to work this morning. it looks perfectly nice, the owner and colleague were very friendly. i wish them all the best. but to be honest, i would be really surprised if this succeeds. the store seems to have multiple personalities, none of which appear strong enough to make for a viable personality (or business.) part sandwich shop, part produce store, part nick-nacks (coffee mugs, lunch boxes etc.), and then model airplanes too? seems more conceptual, and trendy, than solid. the menu wasn’t especially interesting, but i guess the proof will be in the pudding, which i haven’t tried yet.
good luck picnic! i don’t think it’s going to be one…

    Hi Carlton,

It would be great if you could let your readers know about the 4th Annual Gender Equality Festival – Saturday July 11, 10am – 4pm – happening in Cuyler Gore for the first time this year!

    Fourth Annual Gender Equality Festival!
Brooklyn Celebrates Equality, Health, and Women’s Empowerment!
    (July 11, 2009 * 10am – 4pm)
at Cuyler Gore Park, Fort Greene, Brooklyn
Corner of Greene Ave + Fulton St, C train to Lafayette

Free Event! Live Music, Food, Prizes, Games!

For the past three years, hundreds of people have come out to attend the Gender Equality Festival, an empowering free public event for education, community interaction, networking, resource sharing, arts and recreation. Girls for Gender Equity (GGE) is proud to present the Fourth Annual Gender Equality Festival on July 11th from 10am – 4pm at Cuyler Gore Park in Fort Greene, Brooklyn. This year’s theme, “Brooklyn We Go Hard,” serves as an exciting and dynamic tribute to women’s advocacy, resilience and leadership. This year’s festival proves that the fight for women’s rights and recognition is alive and fierce.

Over 50 community organizations, artists, athletes and activists will be featured in this year’s festivities, highlighting the vibrant artistic and activist communities in New York City. Acclaimed organizations such as CAMBA, The Asian Pacific Islander Coalition on HIV/AIDS (APICHA), The Hip-Hop Association and Bailey’s Café will be onsite to discuss vital topics including reproductive health, self-defense, women’s rights, sports and fitness, and provide resources for the community and those who seek to work for issues of gender equity on the local and global level. Performances and exhibitions by established and emerging artists will be ongoing throughout the day to support the fight to create safe and supportive spaces for communities to thrive and be free from harassment and violence.

Recognizing the importance and need for effective youth leadership, the festival will provide a special Youth Forum for youth activists and organizers led by the young women of GGE’s Sisters in Strength internship program. This interactive dialogue will include youth organizations across the five boroughs and highlight their work, which seeks to create safe spaces and resources for New York City youth. Sisters in Strength’s original Forum Theater work “More Than Just A Touch,” which explores the impact of sexual harassment in New York City schools, will also be presented.

In addition to entertainment, activities, and information, free food and prizes will be given out to those who attend.

About GGE: Formed in 2001, GGE is a widely respected and acclaimed organization committed to the physical, psychological, social and economic development of girls and women. Through education, organizing and physical fitness, GGE encourages communities to remove barriers and create opportunities for girls and women to live self-determined lives.
