Central Brooklyn Jazz Fest

I covered this briefly in a previous post but I wanted to mention it again…  The event take place the entire month of April with concerts at various venues.

The event website can be accessed here.  There’s also some coverage from The Brooklyn Paper.

Now that I’ve met you all face to face I’m a little concerned that I may lose some of my editorial vitriol but regardless I had a great time at karaoke and look forward to hanging out again.

As for Mirrors on Grand, surprisingly it was my first time there. All I can say is the aesthetic is great and the service was excellent. There’s also decent pizza across the street. Not necessarily as good as Not Ray’s or Pipitone’s but good enough when you’ve had one too many drinks.

Lesterhead, I suggest some type of musical theater theme for the wedding (Hair, Grease, Rocky Horror, maybe West Side Story or an adaptation of The Warriors). You and your future husband were naturals… Again congrats on your pending nuptials.

Wednesday Crime Time

Here’s this week’s Police Blotter from the Brooklyn News…  Nothing too shocking.  iPhones and iPods remain the primary driver of street crime.  I see people everyday mindlessly walking the streets mesmerized by their digital toys…  Realize you’re not only displaying an item that makes you a target but you’re also most likely not aware of your surroundings because you either can’t hear (listening to music), can’t see (sending a text) or possibly both.

The one funny story involves a panhandler and someone who probably deserved to get his money taken.   The victim pulled out $10 and said “This is work money” as in “I worked for it why should I give it to you?”.  The panhandler took it then brandished a crow bar.  Why taunt someone who is already down on their luck (or  whatever the circumstance) to make them feel worse?  If you don’t want to give them anything just wish them luck and keep walking.

I was always curious about that mural…

bogarro

The NYT FG/CH blog has a great post today on the history behind the mural at Vanderbilt & Myrtle…  Now this is what I’m expecting to see from the NY Times.  If they are going to dedicate resources to this blog at least use them to research stories random bloggers like me don’t have the time to follow up on.

Der Schwarze Kölner = The Black Cologner

biergarten

I should have posted this last week but I assume most readers also read the Clinton Hill Blog…  While this blog was the first to report the new beer garden coming to the space formerly occupied by Seven Corners Hardware (Brownstoner got the tip from me, I got the tip from a friend who lives across the street from the location), CHB provides us with more in-depth information.    Here’s an interview with the owners and a link to future reviews on metromix (included in their list of outdoor bars).  The owner is a German of African descent hence “Der Schwarze Kölner”.

3 Courses = $23…Dine In Brooklyn Begins

Dine In Brooklyn began yesterday and continues through April 2.   Most neighborhood restaurants are participating.  Hopefully they will keep extending it like Manhattan’s which I think lasted 3 months…  Check this link for more information.

Composting @ Fort Greene Park

I’m not familiar with the Inter Press Service and I’m not quite sure why this article is in a Lebanese online newspaper but make sure to get your compost on at Fort Greene Park…  Help the environment and keep stinking trash off the streets (especially when the weather gets warm).

Day Care Sundays @ Moe’s

nokids

I know I’ve discussed this issue before but it just irks me… Hopefully this is the last time I mention it.

It’s late Sunday afternoon/early evening, around 6:30, I’m in the back area at Moe’s enjoying conversation and cold beer.  In the middle of my conversation I turn to the left and see someone’s 4 year old kid staring at me.  I know I covered this in a previous post but the presence of kids in bars just bothers me.  I don’t want to worry about watching my beer because your toddler keeps bumping into the table.  I don’t want to hear your baby crying.  Again I love kids but in my opinion it’s jut not the place for them.  I’m not talking about  pubs or restaurants or coffee/tea shops.  I’m specifically speaking of bars where the only product sold is alcohol.  I feel there is a strange sense of entitlement among certain parents these days.  They seem to think just because they are now parents their social patterns don’t need to change.  Just strap the kid to your back and head out to the bar and let the kid run around.  There are plenty of places to take your kids, I just don’t believe bars should be on that list.

Regardless of my opinion I have a feeling the trend is only going to get worse as we complete the transition toward a more suburban rather than urban reality.   Maybe I’ll get used to it and offer babysitting services during afternoon happy hour drinking.  I’ll set up a little service in the back of Moe’s.  At least I can make a little money while getting my drink on. What’s the going rate for babysitters these days?

Happy Birthday Spike!

40acres

Spike Lee turns 52 today.  While he’s no longer in the neighborhood he does still have an office on South Elliott next door to Mullane’s.  Here’s a little history on Mr. Lee and Fort Greene from the book “Street Smart”.
