If You’re Thinking of Living in Fort Greene… Circa 1984
Fort Greene has always been an enclave of ethnic diversity but many believe the one event that began the gentrification process in earnest was the area’s designation as a historic landmark district in 1978… While the neighborhood has been slowly gentrifying for 30 years, I think the rate has increased dramatically in the past 5 or 6 years.
Here’s an article discussing the changing demographics… From 1984.
Here’s an article discussing the tension created when African Americans initially moved to the neighborhood… From 1894.

I have been raised in Fort Greene all my life, and i find the diversity of my community as being enlightening. I am African American, born in Brooklyn . It is a honor to share my neighborhood with many ethnicities, races, and cultures. Everyone bring a certain spice to the “hood” neighborhood lol
and it feels very very village like here in Brooklyn. I love all the restaurants, the shops and the people. There are many who havent adapted to the new changes that is occuring in Fort Greene, blacks, whites and asians alike but they dont matter anyway. Change is good.
